Proposed Ground Zero Mosque Under Fire from Conservative Groups
A proposed mosque near the Ground Zero site in lower Manhattan is drawing fire from a number of conservative groups and news sources (*cough* Fox New *cough*) who buy into the ludicrous idea that this is somehow an insult to those who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Their reasoning seems to revolve around the tired, racist idea that all Muslims are somehow implicated in terrorism. The proposed mosque would somehow enshrine Muslim extremeism in the shadow of the WTC tragedy. I so not know where to begin to describe what is wrong with this position. Fortunately, I don’t have to as an excellent article in yesterday’s NY Daily News exposes the ludicrous nature of the objections to the project. It’s authors include my Franciscan brother Fr. Brian Jordan, OFM, who worked as a chaplain at Ground Zero.
